Suite Rose

3 Etudes from 32 Etudes for Clarinet by C. Rose Arranged for 2 Clarinets by Wesley Hall

Music with clarinet and rose
ABOUT SUITE ROSE

Suite Rose is an arrangement for clarinet duet of three etudes from 32 Etudes for Clarinet by C. Rose. The suite consists of etudes 9, 25, and 10, to which I added an additional part. The additional part enhances the lines of the original etudes with rhythmic and harmonic accompaniments and contrapuntal lines. I alternate Rose's lines between the two parts to make the arrangement equally engaging for both players.

The fascinating aspect of arranging Suite Rose was looking at the etudes from a new perspective and exploring the possibilities of what can be combined with Rose’s lines. It was an enjoyable endeavor, and I hope I have added a fun and interesting composition to the clarinet repertoire.

ABOUT C. ROSE

Cyrille Rose (1830-1903) was an important musician in the lineage of the French school of clarinet playing. His teacher was H. Klose and his students included Henri and Alexander Selmer and Paul Jeanjean. Rose was professor of clarinet at the Paris Conservatory and clarinetist with the Paris Opera. He advised composers such as Charles Gounod and Jules Massenet on writing for the clarinet, and worked with the clarinet manufacturer Buffet on improving the dimensions of the clarinet bore.

Rose's 32 Etudes for Clarinet, which he derived from oboe studies by Franz Wilhelm Ferling, is part of the standard repertoire in the curriculum of clarinetists. Rose's other widely-used methods are 40 Studies for Clarinet, which he transcribed from violin etudes composed by various violinists, and 20 Grand Studies for Clarinet, which he transcribed from 24 Caprices for Violin by Pierre Rode.

ABOUT THE ARRANGER

Wesley Hall studied clarinet with Maurice Sailly at the Settlement Music School and with Ronald Reuben and Ignatius Gennusa at The New School of Music. While in high school, he and colleagues from the Settlement Music School performed the third movement of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante (K. 297b) with The Philadelphia Orchestra. From 1977 to 1989 he was clarinetist with the contemporary music ensemble Relāche and performed with orchestras and chamber music ensembles.

Since 1989 he has worked as a freelance copyright clearance editor for book publishers, obtaining permission on their behalf to include copyrighted material in college textbooks and multimedia products.
